Cecilia McGough is a mental health activist, and an astronomy and astrophysics major at the Penn State University. In her TED talk, she talks about her battle with schizophrenia, and how despite it being a common mental health disorder, people are treated as monsters.

Cecilia has lived all her life with schizophrenia, but it became progressively worse in her junior year at high school. In her talk, she explains her hallucinations and how they led to her attempting to take her own life. But, she slowly tried overcoming these obstacles. “I have gotten very good at just pretending I’m not seeing what I’m seeing, or ignoring them.”

She talks about how people closest to her discouraged her from accepting medical help. “When I first became open about having schizophrenia, it was a shock to even the people closest to me. It took me eight months after my suicide attempt to finally get the treatment that I needed,” say shares. She goes on to recount how she was told that ‘society’ would call her ‘crazy’, and ‘dangerous’ and how ‘she won’t be able get a job’. She persevered, however, and got the necessary treatment. “Getting medical help was the best decision that I have ever made. And I am confident that I would not be here today if I didn’t get the proper medical help,” Cecilia says.

‘Students with Schizophrenia’ is a non profit organisation founded by her, which empowers college students and gives them the resources needed remain in college and be successful. She says: “I’m not going to wallow in self-pity about my diagnosis. Instead, I want to use it as a common denominator, so I can help other people who have schizophrenia. And I’m not going to rest until anyone who has schizophrenia worldwide is not afraid to say the words: ‘I have schizophrenia’. Because it’s okay to have it.”

======================================================================
I developed schizophrenia at 37 which is unusual but not unheard of. I also have OCD which for me is repetitive unwanted thoughts and adult onset tourette's which the medical experts say is impossible. I have seen ppl on Quora also state they have adult onset tourette's and some experts now concede it may be possible. 20 years late but what the hey they are seemingly amazed that the Wuhan spreads like an aerosol when infected ppl cough without a mask we have known that since at least the 1960's we don't need to waste time and money reinventing the wheel.

Schizophrenia is not okay and we need to find a cure for it. Schizophrenics live on average ten years less than the general population. 80% of us smoke cigarettes or have an alcohol or drug abuse disorder in my case it is booze not that it isn't a whole lot of fun sometimes however liquor costs money and if you do so in a bar or club or restaurant it costs a lot more. I have a fatty liver and a beer gut despite walking a fair bit. Getting scooped off the sidewalk by the cops and paramedics is not fun and embaressing for a Christian. I am sober today. We have a suicide rate 20 times the general population I have attempted suicide twice as a schizophrenic although taking all the medicine I had at once was really just a desperate attempt to sleep in one case it worked in the other it didn't. Haven't taken medication since the last time. Slept 12 hours total yesterday which was great. No suicidal ideation this month and for many weeks before that.

My Mom and sibling tried to get me help immediatly and I wanted the help as well. The local hospitals here in Lower Mainland with psych wards won't admit you unless you are a threat to yourself or others. I was given various medications over the years some which made me physically ill but did nothing. The klonopin did nothing and gave me that side effect which takes away 75% of your vision briefly at random years after you stop taking it. After finally getting hospitalized for two weeks 7 years into it I was given some medication which helped. I was later given respiridol which helped further but also caused impotence. Lots of ppl won't take this medication and ones like it just for that reason. Since I have ceased medication my tardive symptoms are way down my tourette's continues but isn't the loud variety which damages my hearing makes me hoarse or causes ppl in the neighbourhood to call the cops. Some hallucinations continue auditory and visual. Memory is spotty at times panic attacks are gone but I am at times startlled for no reason. Haven't had a good dream since I don't know when. Voices in the head continue but today they were silent for several hours. Years ago it all went into remission for 2 weeks then started up again sigh.

I donated $250 to the BCSS this month they are trying find a cure for schizophrenia. Loading Image...ttool.com/donations/Donate?ID=2002&AID=1869

Congrats to Cecilia McGough for going for her Astronomy and Astrophysics degrees. Ppl who develop schizophrenia often do so in college or university and often quickly kill themselves or spend the rest of their lives on welfare or if they are lucky some sort of blue collar working class life. A TED talk pretty cool.

If ppl think you are some sort of violent monster you can often use that to your advantage. There was a best selling book decades ago called Winning Through Intimidation well sometimes intimidation has to be countered by violence.

I first saw an example of this in the Vancouver Courier newspaper years ago.
